By Ona
My husband and I received this unit about a month ago. Shipping was very prompt, and we received phone calls in advance to schedule delivery. The box had a dent or two in it, but the unit is SO well packed that there was absolutely no damage to the trainer itself. We hauled it upstairs, piece by piece, and my husband assembled it while I escaped for a pedicure (end to end was about 2.5 hrs for one person). There were some interesting nuances in assembly, things such as holes & screws not lining up properly, which led to a screw or two getting stripped, but nothing that left him perplexed... swearing a few times is more like it. The font in the manual is quite small, so if your vision isn't hawk-like, you'll be getting your squint on.
Anyhoo, onto its use. I absolutely love this thing. Ellipticals are by far my preferred cardio machines, and this one is every bit as good as the ones at the gym that run 3-4x the price. Extraordinarily smooth pedal action, completely noiseless (which I'm not used to - "is this thing on?"), fan is somewhat nominal but a nice touch. I haven't used the iPod / mp3 connection because we have a music source in the bonus room, so there's no need, but again, it's a nice touch. It has a nice long stride, one that seems more circular in motion than other ellipticals I've used, so the motion is a hybrid between cross-country and a bike. Its resistance settings seem more difficult than other units I've used... what I mean is that a level 4 (on a scale of 1-20) on this machine requires more effort than a level 4 on the Lifestrides at the gym (these use a 1-10 or 1-12 scale, I can't recall which). I'm fine with it, but the point is that you wouldn't necessarily use the same resistance settings, that's all. Backward training takes some getting used to because of the more circular stride pattern, but you get used to just about any elliptical with consistent use. The unit does not rock on the carpet - it's steady and solid. The only thing I'd like to change is the space between the upper handlebars - when you use the lower ones (with the pulse sensors), the upper ones can touch your forearms if you're leaning forward at all (but that's a no-no anyway). Another couple inches between them and this wouldn't happen, but it's a gentle reminder that I need to correct my form.
Yes, it's pricy, but if you're investing in your health and you're not planning to either join or go to the gym, you'll pay less in 2 years for this than you would for said membership (depending on monthly dues, of course).

I figured I'd treat myself to a big purchase Christmas gift and this was it.
PROS:
-Setup was straight forward and painless. The screws, nuts, bolts, and washers were separated by installation steps. This was a big plus. Alan wrenches and a screw driver was also included (if you have a small ratchet with a 1/2" socket, it'll make for an easier install). All pieces were there. Everything screwed together fine with the exception of the rubber piece on the very back of the unit (behind the stepper foot pedals).
-Once put together this unit is very stable and very quiet. I live in an apartment and it makes very little noise. Based on the reviews, that is one of the reasons I chose this unit.
-The big foot pedals are great in that you are not locked into a fixed position to make things easier for your knees. There is a lot of room to move your foot around.
-Because of the design of the foot pedals, you can mimic running very closely on this during the workouts if you like. You can make your feet roll from heel to ball of foot if you like. You can lean forward and stress the quads (front of thighs), or lean back and stress the glutes and hams (butt and back of thigh). Or stand relatively straight up and stress everything from the calves up.
-Incline and resistance are challenging
CONS:
-These may be deal breakers to some.
-No input for weight/age. Therefore the accuracy of calorie counter is irrelevant. I called customer service and found that the calorie counter is based on a person who weighs 150lbs. So you'll have to do a math calculation to figure out the calorie burn of your workout ( (BW/150) x CALS DISPLAYED = CALS BURNED). I don't absolutely depend on the accuracy of calorie counters on machines, but I don't want to have to do mathematical formulas in my head while working out, etc (i.e., I'm 185lbs so in order to burn 300 Cals, I go until the screen says 240 Cals).
-The water bottle holder is very low. If you are relatively tall, or should I say not short, you'll basically have to stop your session to grab the bottle or else you'll be hitting the arm that you are reaching with, with the elliptical handles. I'm only 5'11".
-The elliptical arms are pretty close (narrow design), but you can adjust them.
-The speakers has absolutely no bass.
CONCLUSION:
It's a good model, I'll be using it. The overall function of the workout is good, but it has a few drawbacks. I guess I've been spoiled by the Cybex ARC trainers at my gym, because it blows this away. But again for a home model, the Horizon EX-79 is good. The motion of the workout is good and the foot pedals are great. I like the power incline very much also. The water bottle holder is much too low and leads me to assume that along with the 150lbs static setting this unit was designed for smaller people. However, I have no doubt I'll melt some fat away on it.

Works great, easy to assemble, missing some of the nice presets I've seen on others but the functionality is all there. So far its been very durable, and the glide is very smooth. Getting the extra feature of automatic power incline vs the manual incline is worth the money.
